Transparent methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator estimates a job price from the costs and target margin you enter. It does not estimate company-wide net profit and does not determine what your market will accept.

Formula

  1. Direct costs = labor + materials
  2. Overhead allocation = direct costs × entered overhead rate
  3. Total entered cost = direct costs + overhead allocation
  4. Target price = total entered cost ÷ (1 − target margin)
  5. Estimated job profit = target price − total entered cost
  6. Markup = estimated job profit ÷ total entered cost

Worked example

Direct costs
$7,000
Overhead allocation
15%
Total entered cost
$8,050
Target margin
20%
Calculated price
$10,062.50
Estimated job profit
$2,012.50
Equivalent markup
25%

Assumptions and limitations

Overhead is allocated as a percentage of direct job costs. Your accounting method may allocate overhead using revenue, labor hours, or annual billable capacity instead. Add every cost that matters to your business, including taxes, payment fees, discounts, permits, financing costs, contingency, and warranty reserves when applicable. Example inputs are illustrative—not industry averages or pricing advice.

Understanding Contractor Profit Margins

What target margin should a contractor use?

There is no universal target that fits every contractor or job. Use your own completed-job records and include the full cost of labor, materials, overhead, risk, callbacks, and payment terms. This calculator shows the price implied by the target you choose; it does not choose the target for you.

Markup vs Margin: What's the Difference?

Markup is the percentage added to your costs to determine price.Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. A 25% markup equals a 20% margin. Use our markup vs margin calculator to see the exact conversion, or try the contractor estimating software to build accurate quotes every time.

Common Pricing Mistakes to Avoid
